Hybrid energy solution: Bredenoord powers e-mobility event
The Swedish firm Ferronordic GmbH is an international dealer and service provider for construction machinery and trucks. The firm is building a new service center in Wunstorf, near Hannover. To commemorate placing the first pole, Ferronordic organized an e-mobility event where people could get to know the electric trucks from Volvo and Renault. The challenge: there was not enough energy available at the construction site. The environment and sustainability are very important to Ferronordic, which is why they chose a sustainable hybrid energy solution from Bredenoord.
The construction site did not yet have a grid connection at the time of the first pole’s ceremony. Charging the electric trucks demonstrated at the event required a reliable and powerful energy solution. The firm wanted to be sure that this energy solution also had the lowest CO2 emission possible.
This event became a huge success, by enlisting Bredenoord as the energy provider for a hybrid solution.
Reliable and uninterrupted power supply
Bredenoord was already known to the firm as a leading provider of mobile power solutions. Together, Bredenoord and Ferronordic developed a sustainable concept to keep the event up and running. By choosing a hybrid system they showed that smart solutions lead to CO2 emission reduction and lower fuel consumption.
The event’s energy solution consisted of two parts. First there was the Battery Box, which uses li-ion batteries to store up to 600 kW of energy from various sources: solar, wind, the grid or a genset. In Hannover the Battery Box was powered by a 250 kVA genset. Usually a genset would be running for up to eight hours during such an event, which requires a lot of fuel and results in a lot of CO2 emission. This time, the genset could charge the Battery Box in only three hours, resulting in an emission reduction of 40%.
Alternative environmentally friendly energy supply concept
The second part of the energy solution was the Mobile Solar Plant, an innovative and environmentally friendly alternative to using gensets at events and festivals. This plant with 90 panels and an unfolded surface of 150m2 is transported in a 20 ft container and is plug and play, which means it can be put to use quickly and conveniently right away.
The hybrid system mostly draws its power from solar rays. The solar panels are the most important energy source and can simultaneously charge the internal battery system, the Smart Powerbank. To ensure power access even when the sun doesn’t shine, the installation contains a built-in 35 kVA genset for backup power.
With a total power of 58 kW – 30 kW from the battery system and 28 kW from the gensets – the fuel consumption and CO2 emission were reduced considerably, when compared to a conventional setup of only gensets. This project still required some fuel, for which the more sustainable diesel GTL was used. GTL is an innovative synthetic diesel that burns cleaner and therefore produces less emission.
Custom solution
Ferronordic aims for customer focus and custom solutions. These are Bredenoord’s principles as well. The delivery and installation of the equipment was carried out by Bredenoord’s own transportation and service fleet. Thanks to nationwide franchises in Germany the transportation routes are short and reliable deliveries are guaranteed.
In addition to hybrid energy concepts Bredenoord also develops other innovative solutions, such as the methanol fuel cell unit, in order to offer even more environmentally friendly technologies for energy generation in the future.
