Because the engine could run so efficiently, power was supplied more sustainably, economically and quietly. The burning of coal alone is responsible for 41% of the global CO₂ emission. In addition, the available amount of fossil fuel is decreasing. Obtaining oil is becoming relatively more expensive, as most of the easily obtainable oil has already been used. The urgency of emission-free construction has increased over the past few years, in part due to the NOx-crisis in the Netherlands. Fortunately some projects provide the opportunity to develop innovative solutions that will contribute to the goal of eventually building entirely emission-free. Approximately 5.5 kilometers of the dikes will be raised and reinforced. A sheet pile wall will also be installed along the banks of the Old Rhine along almost the entire length of this dike project.
