Thanks to smart meters, sensors and algorithms, we can monitor and control energy consumption, production and storage in real time. This leads to optimisation, cost savings and a more efficient, sustainable energy system. ## Insight as the basis for sustainability Insight is indispensable for the efficient use of fuel and energy. Particularly with our hybrid setups, the energy consumption profile is essential for making optimal use of them. Sustainable energy use therefore requires real-time information. Based on this conviction, we at Bredenoord are striving for a fully connected fleet. To make this possible, we first need access to relevant data. A few years ago, the first nodes were installed in our generators. These collect data on operating hours, location, alarm status and fuel level. We expect to equip a large part of our fleet with this technology shortly. ## From data to action and predictions By collecting and intelligently combining this data, we can, for example, improve our rental process. In time, this will even enable us to make predictions. Think of the early detection of faults, so that we can prevent them before they occur. This not only brings internal benefits, but also offers significant added value for our customers. We are already analysing the data from the first nodes. Once a large proportion of the fleet is connected, we can further optimise our processes and make a real impact. For years De Nijs has been working with Bredenoord during projects with insufficient grid access. Gensets are the usual choice, but in the context of the energy transition De Nijs is also interested in alternative power solutions, which is why a pilot recently took place in Heerhugowaard. This has been demonstrated in a pilot project with client Open Dutch Fiber (ODF). By running generators only when power is needed, fuel consumption – and consequently CO₂ emissions – is significantly reduced. The reduced operating hours also result in less odour and noise pollution.
