Behind the scenes, countless systems are running that must keep working when it matters most. And that is where temporary power supply currently plays an important role. And that is where temporary power supply currently plays an important role. ## Major renovation planned The Noordtunnel between Alblasserdam and Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht in South Holland, the Netherlands, opened in 1992. Now, a major renovation is approaching. Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, Ballast Nedam is renovating the Noordtunnel in close collaboration with Croonwolter&dros. This renovation forms part of a portfolio that also includes upgrades to the Beneluxtunnel and Tweede Heinenoordtunnel. Preparatory work on the Noordtunnel has already begun. And Bredenoord is involved too. The technical room in the West service building houses three permanently installed generators. They are essential to the tunnel’s safety. In an emergency, they supply the power needed to keep critical systems operating, such as: - the smoke extraction fans; - the fire suppression system; - other essential tunnel systems. As the technical room is being renovated, the existing generators have to be removed. Naturally, the tunnel’s safety systems must remain fully operational at all times. They need to respond not only to local alerts from the tunnel, but also to external signals from Rijkswaterstaat. To make this possible, Bredenoord built a dedicated control panel that communicates with the existing control systems. This presented a significant technical challenge, as the technology is still part of the tunnel’s original installation. Months of engineering, preparation and testing therefore preceded the actual switchover. During a planned tunnel closure at the end of August, the time had come. The existing generators were disconnected, and our three 500 kVA generators took over their role. Then came the ultimate test: does the complete installation work on site exactly as intended? ## It did! Since then, our temporary power supply has been ready whenever needed, allowing the Noordtunnel to remain safely in operation during this phase of the renovation. A great example of how temporary power is about more than power capacity alone.
