To prevent problems during periods of high demand in winter, power plants have been set up across the country to serve as additional reserves. Bredenoord supplied three of these for energy supplier ENGIE, located near Brussels and Ghent. Bredenoord is already a partner of ENGIE in the Netherlands (including with the Big Battery Box) and was therefore invited to tender for the temporary power plants across the border. In addition to the physical equipment, ENGIE requested an action plan and project management. For two locations, this resulted in standard configurations of 12 and 20 MW respectively. Forty-eight 1,250 kVA generators were deployed for this purpose. At the Drogenbos power station, an out-of-the-box solution was required in addition to the 12 MW capacity. ## Safety first “With that third configuration, we were dealing with a 110 MVA high-voltage transformer,” explains Gert-Jan Elfrink, Operations Manager Solutions. “This can generate an enormous short-circuit capacity, which cannot be handled using ‘standard’ switchgear. By using large series transformers, we were able to reduce this to an acceptable level. This created a safe installation. In this way, we managed to devise a competitive plan that combines efficiency and safety.” ## Hands-on collaboration on-site To implement the project, the Bredenoord engineers formed a project team with experts from ENGIE’s EMS (European Maintenance Services) team. “That collaboration went very well; it was a team of hands-on technical experts. By sharing the knowledge of all parties, a project plan could be drawn up quickly to start the operation. Initially, it was an intensive process involving mainly gathering a great deal of information, but work soon began on site as well. Everything, from installation to control systems, was carried out by Bredenoord technicians. The installation includes 24 generators of 2,000 kVA, 4 transformers of 8 MVA and 2 transformers of 16 MVA.” ## Rapid implementation For Engie, Bredenoord’s expertise and experience with such ‘unusual’ connections to the high-voltage grid were particularly important. Steven Vervaeke, project engineer at ENGIE: “Together, we built a complex yet safe grid within a tight schedule. This 32 MW project required some less common materials. For Bredenoord, sourcing these at short notice proved no real problem. Many of these locations are in or near Natura 2000 areas, which means strict rules regarding emissions apply.
